Reaching Portugal

Philippians 2:3-4

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

The Hodges

We are Brandon and Tiffany. Married for over 10 wonderful years and fortunate enough to experience many adventures along the way. We are dada and mama to Zeke, Zoey, Ziya, and Zans. As a family, our adventure continues as the Lord calls us to live and minister in Northern Portugal.

At different points in our lives, we both felt called by God to live and work overseas in ministry settings, and in His providence, He used our individual passions to bring us together. That is why shortly after marrying, we pursued a job with a nonprofit organization, and a couple of years later, we found ourselves moving to Portugal. While living in Portugal since 2013, we have seen the Holy Spirit move and work in profound ways not only in the lives of those around us but also in our very own lives. With an ever-increasing desire and passion to share the truth and hope of the gospel with those around us, we are thrilled to be doing so in Portugal.

We truly enjoy the simple yet enriching life that we have come to know in Portugal. The people are absolutely some of the kindest that we have met, and the cultural differences have grown on us as we smile and simply state, “That’s just the Portuguese way”. We are incredibly thankful for the love and support that we receive from so many friends back in the States, and we are overwhelmed and full of gratitude because of the friendships that we have made in our current home.

Aloha! We are Arbab and Leesa. In October of 2021 we moved to Vila do Conde from Honolulu, HI. We spent three months in Portugal in the winter of 2018, and after two years back in Hawaii, the Lord called us back! During the pandemic in 2020, we realized there was no better time  to follow God’s lead to Portugal. While so many were paralyzed by fear, we felt convicted to lean into and share the hope of the gospel.

When we came our first time around, we were newly married and without any children. Now we have two beautiful little ones, Enzo and Mika. We welcomed Mika five months after arriving. Adjusting to our growing family as well as embracing a new culture and language has grown us in many ways. It’s not been easy by any means, but God has continuously guided and provided for us. The Hodge’s and others in our church community have been helpful and supportive as we continue to learn our identity in ministry here.

Portugal is a very easy-going and relational culture. People love to sit over a cup of coffee and “talk story”  as we say in Hawaiʻi. There is still much for us to learn about living here, but our Portuguese community has grown and we are so excited for the relationships we have so far. We are so grateful for the partnership and support we have received from so many.
